MacGregor Bits

Bit #1 is the Stick Bit and it was designed to be very light but still effective and comfortable to the horse. If your horse has a big head shake and seems uncomfortable in the mouth this bit is a good place to start. The heavier bits may be bruising your horse’s mouth as the weight of the bit is knocked up and down with the more pronounced head shake. The swept back shank offers enough collection yet softens the action to a softer level and requires a tight curb chain or the bit will over rotate and become ineffective. This bit is offered to the public at $60. 

Bit #2 is the T-bone bit named for the two inch center section in the mouth piece. This is the most comfortable collection bit we at Macgregor Stables have ever used. We wrap the center section with latex which we replace every six months for maximum comfort. This bit is used with a tight curb chain for best effect. A loose curb chain will cause pinching between the curb chain and the top rear part of the shank. This bit is offered to the public at $70.

Bit #3 is the MacGregor Bit and is used with draw reins. It has been designed to work off nose pressure and yet offer a slight amount of bit rotation so that the horse can learn how to use a normal bit in time. The nose strap is tightened until the rein rings are up to the small rings at the bottom of the shanks when the curb chain is on and tight. Cut off the extra nose strap one inch after the last keeper and punch new holes if the strap stretches or you need to fit this bit to a smaller horse. This bit is offered to the public at $100 and replacement nose straps are $20. Draw reins are $60 extra. This bit can be used without draw reins but it works best with the draw reins hooked to the stirrup buckle. This bit should only be used a maximum of 50% of the time as it is only a teaching aid. This bit comes in sizes long and short.

Bit #4 is a Saddlebury and is designed after the Banbury bit for the dry mouthed horse or any horse that doesn’t like the bit rotating in the mouth. Each shank moves independently while the mouthpiece stays stationary. This bit works best with a loose curb chain and is offered to the public at $80.

Bit #5 is a Pipe Bit which comes in a straight shank Saddlebred design or a Walking Horse curved shank design. This bit is also for the dry mouthed horse but is a solid bit where both shanks work together as one piece. A pipe rotates around a thinner center section allowing for the mouthpiece rotation. This bit uses a loose or medium tight curb chain depending on the shank design and both offer extreme finesse. The mouthpiece can and should be covered in latex to provide a softer feel to the horse. This should only be used on the advanced horse due to its solid construction. This bit is offered to the public at $80.

Bit #6 is the Double Mouth. This bit is designed for a horse who has suffered damage to his bars (the fine parallel bones the bit rests on in the lower jaw). This problem is usually noticed by the horse excessively tossing his head and becoming very one sided or hard mouthed. The top mouthpiece places the bit and the lower mouthpiece works like a normal bit but on new fresh tissue. With this new start many horses can learn to follow the bits commands and become a great riding partner. When purchased this bit is wrapped in latex for further comfort and the latex should be changed every six months. This bit looks sever but it has been designed to be very comfortable to the horse and every horse that has needed this bit at MacGregor Stables has been fully rehabilitated. This bit uses a loose curb chain. This bit is offered to the public at $100.
